Generally, sesame oil processed with various Indian herbs is used for Shirodhara. However, milk and buttermilk processed with herbs also are used in this treatment depending upon the patient’s condition. A typical Shirodhara session would last 30 to 60 minutes and is done for 3, 7, 14, or 28 days. The duration of a session may vary. The Ayurvedic practitioner determines both the duration and the number of days according to the patient’s age, constitution, and dosha status and the severity of the disease.

 AYURVEDIC MANAGEMENT OF PLANTAR FASCIITIS

Plantar fasciitis is a common condition of pain on the heel or under the feet. Main complaint of the patient is heel pain that will be worse during first few steps after getting up in the morning or after long rest. In this condition, inflammatory changes happen at the site of insertion of plantar ligament on calcaneal bone leading to scarring and finally leading to degenerative changes of plantar fascia.

Plantar fasciitis is related to Vathakandaka mentioned in Classical texts. This is the pain felt in the foot caused by walking along uneven surface.

Ayurvedic treatment for plantar fasciitis is done with many types of Dhara & Kizhi, Lepanam & Bandanam etc.

Lepanam : Suitable herbal paste is applied to the heel till it gets dry itself. When dry it is removed using lukewarm water. This process is repeated many times a day. Bandanam is bandaging done with ayurvedic herbs.

 AYURVEDIC TREATMENT FOR FROZEN SHOULDER

In Ayurveda, frozen shoulder is called Avabahuka. Vata Dosha triggers it. Kapha Dosha causes the stiffness of joints. Because of this particular dosha, people with frozen shoulder experience a sharp increase in pain in cold or wet weather.

There are several Ayurvedic therapies, which can allay the pain and stiffness of frozen shoulder :

Abhyangam – There are medicated oils that can reduce the pain and inflammation when massaged on the shoulder. Heat the oils before you use them. Some oils that you can use are vishagarbha oil, mahanarayana taila, dhanvantara taila, kottamchukkadi thailam, bala taila or prasarinyadi taila.

Elakizhi – This is an herbal poultice made with castor leaves, dashamoola, nirgundi, devadaru, etc. All of them help to balance out Vata Dosha.

Navarakizhi – This treatment starts with the abhyangam oil massage. After that, a rice pack is dipped in the same oil and applied to the site.

Lower your blood sugar – Sometimes high levels of blood sugar in the system can lead to frozen shoulders. Haridra and amlaki powder help bring down blood sugar levels. Few other Ayurved medical Prescriptions can help reduce the blood sugar values.

Exercise – Ayurvedic medication and therapy become much more effective when you pair them with recommended exercise. Exercise increases the blood flow to the shoulder.
